With the latest article that includes updates on the fixes for the issues with the Intel drive's slowdown and also on OCZ Vertex's firmware updates for better speed I started getting really interested in these drives.

However, recently my favorite tech web site AnandTech released a series of articles about the new Intel X25-M and OCZ Vertex SSD drives that were spacious enough to use for operating system and data files but were also priced reasonably for the smaller capacities. I have been following the development of affordable and spacious Solid State Disks for a while now but they have always been too small and to expensive per gigabyte of storage to warrant any serious consideration. The good old Nortion Utilities Defragmenter from Windows 95 days was the last program that I remember having that option.

Disk reimaging software copies the files in the order that they are and does not try to sort by folder structure, likewise the current generation of available disk defragmentation programs such as Diskeeper and JKFDefrag do not perform any type of file sorting by folder structure. A temporary solution would be to wipe out my hard disk and reinstall my operating system from scratch with all the applications to ensure that the related program files would end up together again, but this solution would be very time consuming to do and the original problem would happen again over time. The speed at which I like to work and open up new applications as I'm working on the system was choking my hard disk to death. The good 'ol hard disk had to work extra hard finding all the resource files and dynamic libraries to load anytime I would open up a simple program like TextPad, making me wait sometimes up to 10-seconds before it started. My current Western Digital Caviar Blue 320GB SATA Hard Drive for the OS was super slow after years of updates, service packs, hotfixes, program installations, and general usage.Įven with 0% fragmentation and with only 66% capacity used the slowness was most likely due from the fact that with all the updates applied over the years, programs installed and uninstalled, and the defragmentation being done routinely all the associated files for any given program randomly moved away from each other on the hard disk into distant locations.
